Cannes, on the French Riviera, seems blessed with eternal youth, one of those places whose glamorous appeal never wanes. Its star shines brightest during the eponymous Film Festival each May, when celebs descend for 10 days of partying and room rates reach stratospheric heights. But the Superyachts and Maseratis remain constant features of the Cannes-scape, and people-watching along the palm-studded Croisette is a year-round pastime.

The Hotel Martinez has been no stranger to fame and talent during its 80-year  reign over the seafront.  Renowned for its Art Deco style, lithographs by Dufy, Picasso and Matisse, and glorious, sweeping staircase, the atmosphere is both elegant and informal. Of the 412 rooms, 27 are suites, including the extraordinary 1,000-square-metre penthouse, and the circular Suite des Oliviers whose huge, teak terrace resembles a ship’s deck.

The Martinez boasts the largest private beach on a seafront where elbow room is at a premium, as well as a popular outdoor pool, while the airy rooftop spa has been revamped to stock delicious Sothys and Lancaster products, for some of the best treatments to be had anywhere in Europe.

Not to be missed is a dinner in the hotel’s two-Michelin-starred Palme d’Or restaurant, where head chef Christian Sinicropi conjures magic from fresh, local ingredients, before presenting them with almost Surrealist creativity.

To celebrate 80 years at the top, the Martinez is offering a number of attractive packages. And should all this pampering appear too worldly, the hotel will be happy to charter a yacht to transport you to a world of Cistercian monks, on nearby Ile Saint-Honorat.
